Bill Stewart has been one of my favorite Jazz drummers for several years, after discovering his playing with Larry Goldings & Peter Bernstein on studio recordings and in YouTube videos. This is a performance from the 1997 Modern Drummer Festival that I keep coming back to, so I finally decided to transcribe it.
The trademark 'Bill' isms are plentiful in this performance, a composition in 5/4 by guitarist Peter Bernstein entitled 'Jive Coffee'. Polyrhythms, extended over the barline phrases, coordination puzzles, crossovers, wide dynamic jumps, --and of course that signature ride sound that is unique to Bill. There are tons of highly musical ideas in this solo --take a section (his ending motif is my personal favorite), practice it, and make it your own.
